Ian completed a degree in Natural Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, & Maths) at the University of Birmingham achieving a First with Honours in 2003. For the last 17 years Ian has worked in schools and educational organisations in the UK and across the world including Peru, Romania, Ghana, Cambodia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, the Netherlands, and Australia.
He was Subject Coordinator at a prominent Academy in South London where, in addition to leading the Science Department, he taught classes from Year 7 to Year 11, including GCSE Triple Science and the Double Award. Most recently, Ian worked as a Physics Teacher at an international school in the Netherlands, teaching both MYP Science and IB Physics.
In addition to his classroom teaching experience, Ian has been heavily involved in training and mentoring teachers. He has previously worked at University College London, the University of Warwick and Canterbury Christ Church University and has also supported trainee teachers in other training programmes abroad. During his time at the University of Warwick, Ian was the Course Leader for the Science PGCE, with responsibility for training new science teachers. Alongside this, he was also Course Leader for the Masters in Educational Innovation - a qualification for experienced teachers. As a result, he has extensive experience of supporting students at High School level as well as in Higher Education at leading institutions.
Alongside his work in formal education settings, Ian has also been heavily involved in youth mentor programmes. Over recent years he has led the development of a Youth Mentor Programme that supports young people to pursue their own ambitions, guided by adult mentors. This attention on providing personalised support to all young people enables Ian to develop really strong supportive relationships with his students. Ian loves travelling and spends his free time falling off surfboards or doing triathlons.
Ian has considerable experience of IB Physics. He has delivered both the Higher Level and Standard Level Physics programme to a range of groups and also has extensive experience of guiding students through their Internal Assessments, including students new to studying in English. Ian has also supervised a number of students during this period through their Extended Essays.
