Michael is a creative, experienced and thoughtful practitioner with a strong professional record as an outstanding teacher and intervention specialist. His tailored approach enables students to gain exam confidence, develop new skills and meet personal targets in their learning.
Michael is a fully qualified teacher with over eight years’ experience in Asia and London. His expertise in adapting the curriculum for individual needs, creating strong and supportive learning environments and providing focused and constructive feedback all ensure that his students make exceptional progress. Some of Michael’s recent professional achievements are his consistent recognition as an Outstanding teacher through performance appraisals, taking a leadership role in exam interventions and working in a department whose students were recognised as being in the top 1% nationally for progress in English.
After graduating from Cardiff University in 2007 with a 2.1 in English Literature, Michael went on to work as an EFL teacher in South Korea for three years. Returning from Asia, Michael trained as a teacher at Kings College London, working within highly diverse London schools. Michael’s strengths resulted in him taking leading roles across the school as a coordinator. This included creating curriculum for underachieving students, facilitating gifted and talented study sessions and running booster workshops for exam classes. Students often commented that his lessons were challenging and interesting and Michael prides himself on being an engaging teacher.
As a tutor, Michael offers a strong commitment to student support. He believes that tutoring can be an important period of self-actualisation for students and feels that, in this context, the role of the tutor is to support understanding, develop skills and inspire interest in the subject and its critical study. He maintains high expectations and occupies students in effective ways with their progress and the challenges of the exam. His ability to foster independence is an asset to students completing the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme.
Michael specialises as an exam tutor. He has extensively supported students through their final examinations helping them to attain target grades or to meet University entrance requirements. Often these students make two or more levels progress within a twelve-month period. He has also worked with University students on dissertations and extended essay projects. Michael's competence as a Literacy Coordinator allows him to draw upon a wealth of specialist knowledge and resources which can effectively improve student literacy in preparation for a school entrance exam or upcoming GCSEs.
Michael is currently enrolled on a part time Masters in Creative Writing at Goldsmiths, University of London and will be working with schools in the Brighton and Hove area next academic year as an intervention specialist.
In his spare time, Michael enjoys hiking, cycling and attending academic talks or lectures.
Michael is an examiner for IB English, so has an in-depth understanding of the demands of the exam, and requirements that must be met in order to achieve top grades.
