Emma has sixteen years teaching experience in the Mathematics Department of the very successful St. Mary’s RC High School in Hereford. The Department’s success is attributed to the belief that mindset is more important than initial ability in determining the progress made by pupils in their mathematical understanding. Students are encouraged to have high expectations, to view mistakes as a positive learning experience and to work collaboratively in order to help build their resilience.
Emma caters for all students aged from 10 to 16 years old and particularly excels at helping students who lack confidence and belief in their own ability. She is able to quickly identify with students who struggle to apply their skills and have a fear of failure. Emma uses a range of techniques and methods to tailor her teaching towards students own individual needs. As well as preparing students for their GCSE and IGCSE examinations, she also helps students to prepare for Common Entrance examinations such as the 11+ and 13+.
For her, the most important thing is to help each student feel comfortable and confident to talk about their strengths and weaknesses. Increasing their mathematical understanding of key concepts and procedures is paramount to their success. Emma’s mission has always been to ensure that each student fulfills their potential. Key to this has been teaching lessons that students enjoy, encouraging them to challenge themselves and to take responsibility for their own learning. Emma’s students have always met or exceeded their Government target grades.
Emma has undertaken tutoring each year throughout her teaching career and has found it to be a very rewarding experience. Common misconceptions are addressed as they arise in each topic area and students encouraged to enjoy the difficulties and challenges that naturally occur in their learning. This helps to build resilience and give them confidence when working on unfamiliar questions in exam situations.
Due to a change in circumstances a year ago, Emma is moving into tutoring full time. In this way she can continue with the career that she loves and continue to help students with their mathematical studies. Emma has been an immensely popular mathematics teacher at St. Mary’s RC High School in Hereford.
Emma studied with the Open University and then completed a two-year fast track degree in Secondary Mathematics Education with ICT in 2001. In her spare time, she enjoys swimming, walking and camping.
